What is artificial intelligence research?

For any technology to go to the next level of maturity, broad research on the subject is essential. When it comes to artificial intelligence, nothing can be truer. Dedicated scientists and continues researches have been the main causes for the progress of AI today. Even at present, research activities is the core of AI.

Artificial intelligence has a five decades of rich history. For these five decades, it has produced number of AI (Artificial intelligence) tools, introduced number of fields in to AI, and introduced number of AI problems.

The domains of artificial intelligence research

The areas or the sub-domains of AI are also called ‘problems’ of AI. Each field is viewed as a problem of AI as they are still in the research era. Although these problems of AI are not wholly solved, there are a number of industrial applications invented as a result of the effort resolving the problems of AI.

Reasoning and problem solving is one of the most key matters in artificial intelligence research. This problem is considered as the one which is moderately close to human thinking. If you are a science fiction fan, you should have read 2001 Space Odyssey by Arthur C Clerk and you should remember the computer called HAL. If you do know, then you will have a little idea of what scientists are expecting out of computers, when it comes to reasoning and problem solving.

Knowledge representation is an field where existed from the start of artificial intelligence. If a computer is required to reasonably ‘think’ and solve problems, the computer will need extensive knowledge about the world. In knowledge representation, the knowledge required for ‘thinking’ is stored in intelligent databases and used when required by AI agents.

Planning is another milestone projected in artificial intelligence research. This simply implies that the artificial intelligence agents should be able to setup goals for them, derive schedules, and achieve the goals successfully.

Machine learning is one of the interesting areas of artificial intelligence research, where thousands of experiments have taken place. If the exercise for creating self-learm macine is successful, we can have robots sent to terrible conditions such as extra-solar planets and let the robots ‘live’ there for years sending valuable scientific information. Natural language processing is also a core artificial intelligence research field which goes hand in hand with machine learning. Natural language processing facilitates the machines to learn new things by listening to what humans say.

Tools for artificial intelligence research

Overtime, scientists have produced many successful methods for employing in artificial intelligence research. Although these are called ‘tools’, they are not physical tools, rather theoretical tools. As an example, consider logic programming. Logic programming is one of the outstanding tools used in artificial intelligence research.
