At some point you will need to use oriental rugs cleaning
or do it yourself. The frequency with which you clean your oriental rug will of course depend upon how much traffic it gets and how dirty it gets.
To minimize the amount of cleaning your rug needs, it’s best to either keep it in a low traffic area or at least make sure everyone removes their shoes when in the house. Many people will actually hang their rugs up to display them to keep the wear and tear to a minimum.
Of course, a weekly vacuuming will also help to keep your rugs clean and keep the need for oriental rugs cleaning to a minimum. For most people a good rug cleaning will need to take place about once a year. To determine whether or not your rug is ready for a cleaning you can simply hold up an end of the rug and shake it vigorously. If there is a big cloud of dust, it’s time for a cleaning.
Rubbing your hand over a certain area of the rug briskly for a few minutes can also help determine how dirty the rug is and whether or not it needs to be cleaned.
If it is time for a good cleaning you can actually clean it yourself if you would prefer. The process is quite simple and you will just need some simple household supplies such as a mild detergent, a gentle brush, and some plastic wrap or a clean floor.
The first step is to spot test a small part of the rug to make sure it is colorfast. Just use the mild detergent mixed with water and apply it to an inconspicuous spot on your rug. Gently towel dry it. If the towel does not have any dye on it after drying the rug than your rug should be safe to clean.
Once you have determined your rug can be cleaned, thoroughly vacuum the front and back. Than move it somewhere clean such as a clean basement or garage floor. Or you can just get a big piece of clear plastic and place the rug on that for cleaning.
Wet your rug and gently scrub it with a long handled brush and the mild detergent water mixture. Rub the shampoo into the rug, go with the grain of the fibers. Rinse out the shampoo with cool water.
Make sure all the shampoo is rinsed out, rinse the front and back of the rug. Next, remove all the water from the rug by taking a long rubber squeegee ( a new one that isn’t dirty or that doesn’t have any other chemicals on it).
Allow the rug to lay flat and dry thoroughly. Make sure the rug is completely dry, front and back, before you lay it back down on the floor.
You don’t have to pay a lot of money for oriental rugs cleaning,if you’re careful you can do it yourself. Make sure that the shampoo you use is mild enough and when you vacuum your rug, don’t use a beater bar since that can damage your rug. Keep those tips in mind and your heirloom will continue to be an heirloom for years to come.
